kartlagt og analysert gjennom rammeverket Integrated Design and Delivery System (IDDS).
illustrerer tydelig muligheten for flere automatiseringsprosesser.
dc.description.abstract | Building information modeling (BIM) has gained a solid foothold in the Norwegian architect,
engineering and construction community (AEC) and the use of BIM in projects is increasing rapidly.
The BIM process is highly multidisciplinary, affecting many stakeholders, and the benefits to the project
are significant. However, some technical fields, such as fire protection and acoustics, have not yet
achieved a good propagation into the BIM process and are thereby missing out on its benefits.
In an integrated BIM process, where several disciplines interact, interconnection of each other's models
and documents will benefit the entire design and construction process. It is dependent on a known
industry standard that matches the logic of BIM. The scope of this research project was to investigate
the fire protection industry and how they currently interface with BIM process and to identify how the
industry could improve their practices to contribute further to the use of BIM. With this as the ultimate
goal of this research project, the following problem statement was established: "How is it possible for
the fire protection industry to fully integrate into the BIM process?"
The results of this research project are based on a comprehensive literature study, interviews with
different consulting companies and a survey of fire protection consultants. In order to provide the
research project a solid reputable foundation, a workshop was held in cooperation with Rådgivende
Ingeniørs Forening (RIF), with participants from various consulting companies. With the goal of
promoting the development of the use of BIM within the fire protection industry, the workshop initiated
standardization work for defining the delivery for this industry. With the overall goal of streamlining
the BIM process, various approaches and scenarios were investigated.
An approach where the fire protection consultant distributes their requirements through its own model,
has been identified by the industry as being the most desirable. A seamless exchange of digital
information based on a neutral and open specification like the industry foundation class (IFC) is required
in order to be advantageous to the BIM process and to other disciplines. In this manner, benefits, such
as better interaction between disciplines will minimize conflicts and result in increased quality of the
project. Relevant information provided in the right place at the right time, and increased use of resources
have been identified as significant challenges and are best resolved by positive interaction between
process, people and technology. With regard to the interaction, the results of the research work are
further mapped and analyzed through the framework of the Integrated Design and Delivery System
(IDDS).
The results of this research work have pointed to several areas of possibilities of incorporation of the
requirements from the fire protection industry in today's BIM process. A further development of the fire
protection’s own model methodology has been investigated and a scenario in which the digital model
information is used, clearly illustrates the opportunity for more automated processes. While significant
work on standardization and development remains to fully involve all technical fields in BIM, this
master thesis has shown that it can be highly beneficial. By facilitating a digital work process that
motivates and rewards all contributions, rather than placing barriers in the process, one can really reap
the benefits that the BIM process is intended to provide.
