En studie av brannsikkerhet i BIM
Abstract
Building information modeling (BIM) has gained a solid foothold in the Norwegian architect, engineering and construction community (AEC) and the use of BIM in projects is increasing rapidly. The BIM process is highly multidisciplinary, affecting many stakeholders, and the benefits to the projectare significant. However, some technical fields, such as fire protection and acoustics, have not yetachieved a good propagation into the BIM process and are thereby missing out on its benefits. In an integrated BIM process, where several disciplines interact, interconnection of each other's modelsand documents will benefit the entire design and construction process. It is dependent on a knownindustry standard that matches the logic of BIM. The scope of this research project was to investigatethe fire protection industry and how they currently interface with BIM process and to identify how theindustry could improve their practices to contribute further to the use of BIM. With this as the ultimategoal of this research project, the following problem statement was established: "How is it possible forthe fire protection industry to fully integrate into the BIM process?"The results of this research project are based on a comprehensive literature study, interviews withdifferent consulting companies and a survey of fire protection consultants. In order to provide theresearch project a solid reputable foundation, a workshop was held in cooperation with RådgivendeIngeniørs Forening (RIF), with participants from various consulting companies. With the goal ofpromoting the development of the use of BIM within the fire protection industry, the workshop initiatedstandardization work for defining the delivery for this industry. With the overall goal of streamliningthe BIM process, various approaches and scenarios were investigated. An approach where the fire protection consultant distributes their requirements through its own model, has been identified by the industry as being the most desirable. A seamless exchange of digitalinformation based on a neutral and open specification like the industry foundation class (IFC) is requiredin order to be advantageous to the BIM process and to other disciplines. In this manner, benefits, suchas better interaction between disciplines will minimize conflicts and result in increased quality of theproject. Relevant information provided in the right place at the right time, and increased use of resourceshave been identified as significant challenges and are best resolved by positive interaction betweenprocess, people and technology. With regard to the interaction, the results of the research work arefurther mapped and analyzed through the framework of the Integrated Design and Delivery System(IDDS).The results of this research work have pointed to several areas of possibilities of incorporation of therequirements from the fire protection industry in today's BIM process. A further development of the fireprotection’s own model methodology has been investigated and a scenario in which the digital modelinformation is used, clearly illustrates the opportunity for more automated processes. While significantwork on standardization and development remains to fully involve all technical fields in BIM, thismaster thesis has shown that it can be highly beneficial. By facilitating a digital work process thatmotivates and rewards all contributions, rather than placing barriers in the process, one can really reapthe benefits that the BIM process is intended to provide.
