Abstract
The subject of this study is teaching about consent for children in a society where sexualassault and consent are much debated. In this study I have looked at what discourses areexpressed in support material that teachers can use in teaching about consent in 1.-7.grade. I chose to use the Teaching Portal of Sex and Politikk. The purpose of the study hasbeen to look at the school's role, how attitudes arise and are passed on, and how we canequip pupils to make safe choices for themselves and when meeting others.
As an analytical starting point, I have used Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model, where I have focused on the analysis of social events and social practice. Through analysis,I have looked at what kind of understandings are associated with consent, the student andthe teacher by looking at modality and assumptions, before I have further looked at whatmeanings these understandings add to consent, the student and the teacher. I theninterpreted these understandings as the discourses attitude change discourse, thecompetent student and the responsible teacher.
Finally, I looked at how these three discourses together create a cultural developmentdiscourse for teaching about consent in the Teaching Portal. One of the key findings in thestudy is that the cultural development discourse has several similarities with the goal ofintroducing a consent law. Both the cultural development discourse and the introduction ofa consent law want to be norm-setting through developing good attitudes to make goodchoices for oneself and when meeting others. Another key finding is that teaching aboutconsent in the Teaching Portal seems to have moved away from a purely criminal approachto an wholesome educational approach. The cultural development discourse has both anindividual and a collective aspect, where one works to achieve a safer culture of consentboth for oneself and others. This is how I found out that the Teaching Portal can providethe teacher with good prerequisites for achieving an wholesome educational approach toteaching sexuality, and again teaching about consent.
