Abstract
This thesis delves into the details of bonsai cultivation. It particularly emphasizes thechallenges presented by their constrained environments, especially when compared to theircounterparts in nature. The project’s primary purpose was to develop a life support systemfor bonsai trees. This system is sensor-based and takes inspiration from the natural symbiosisobserved in wild trees. Particularly on the mechanisms of of mycorrhizal networks.Ending up with a smart home system that aims to emulate the natural habitat conditionsand advantages that trees typically experience.
Utilizing Design Thinking (DT) as a guiding philosophy, this research was navigatingthrough a complex product development process. Additionally, the role of biomimicry inDT was explored. This mix of methodologies provided a solid framework for the executionof the project, steering the design and implementation towards a solution that innovativelyaddressed the unique challenges of bonsai tree cultivation.
The journey to achieve this ambitious goal was paved by conducting a comprehensivereview of the mycorrhizal network and selecting suitable technologies. The project was executedthrough a detailed design of a system architecture, with each component describedand implemented. Rigorous testing procedures were conducted to assess the success ofthese implementations.
As a result, a prototype of a life support system that incorporated the principles ofnatural interactions into smart home technology, was created. This innovative system offerssignificant benefits for bonsai tree owners by ensuring the health and growth of theirtrees. Moving forward, this system, enriched by the principles of biomimicry and enabledby technology, holds great potential to enhance the art and practice of bonsai cultivation.Further work and refinements will aim to overcome the challenges faced in this projectand improve the system’s effectiveness.
