i naturen.
i ville trær.
biomimikk i DT utforsket.
dc.description.abstract | This thesis delves into the details of bonsai cultivation. It particularly emphasizes the
challenges presented by their constrained environments, especially when compared to their
counterparts in nature. The project’s primary purpose was to develop a life support system
for bonsai trees. This system is sensor-based and takes inspiration from the natural symbiosis
observed in wild trees. Particularly on the mechanisms of of mycorrhizal networks.
Ending up with a smart home system that aims to emulate the natural habitat conditions
and advantages that trees typically experience.
Utilizing Design Thinking (DT) as a guiding philosophy, this research was navigating
through a complex product development process. Additionally, the role of biomimicry in
DT was explored. This mix of methodologies provided a solid framework for the execution
of the project, steering the design and implementation towards a solution that innovatively
addressed the unique challenges of bonsai tree cultivation.
The journey to achieve this ambitious goal was paved by conducting a comprehensive
review of the mycorrhizal network and selecting suitable technologies. The project was executed
through a detailed design of a system architecture, with each component described
and implemented. Rigorous testing procedures were conducted to assess the success of
these implementations.
As a result, a prototype of a life support system that incorporated the principles of
natural interactions into smart home technology, was created. This innovative system offers
significant benefits for bonsai tree owners by ensuring the health and growth of their
trees. Moving forward, this system, enriched by the principles of biomimicry and enabled
by technology, holds great potential to enhance the art and practice of bonsai cultivation.
Further work and refinements will aim to overcome the challenges faced in this project
and improve the system’s effectiveness.
