Utleveringen av det sårbare barnet: En diskusjon om romanen Tung tids tale og dens etiske utfordringer

Abstract

Olaug Nilssens Tung tids tale (2017) er et verk som utfordrer grensene mellom fiksjon og virkelighet. I boken skriver forfatteren om sitt språkløse autistiske barn, Daniel. Tematikken omhandler den utmattende hverdagen som pårørende, samt kampen mot byråkratiet for å kunne motta den nødvendige hjelpen familien trenger. I denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker jeg hvilke etiske utfordringer utleveringen av det autistiske barnet innebærer, og hvordan det kan forulempe det sårbare barnet. I tillegg undersøker jeg hvilke etiske innsikter og erkjennelser boken innehar, samt hvordan disse kan være av betydning for samfunnet. I oppgavens analysedel benytter jeg Judith Butlers sårbarhetsbegrep i min lesning av romanen, for å undersøke hvordan de litterære personene Olaug og Daniel er sårbare. I tillegg benytter jeg teoretiske bidrag fra Rita Felski og Martha C. Nussbaum for å løfte frem hvordan litteraturen kan ha en anerkjennelseskraft, samt bidra til å vekke empati hos leseren. På bakgrunn av de ovennevnte aspektene ved verket, argumenterer jeg for at romanen kan ha samfunnsmessig nytte.

Olaug Nilssen’s Tung tids tale (2017) is a work that challenges the boundaries between fiction and reality. In the book, the author writes about her non-verbal autistic child, Daniel. The theme revolves around exhausting everyday life of caregiving and the struggle against bureaucracy to receive the necessary help the family needs. In this bachelor’s thesis, I examine the ethical challenges involved in exposing the autistic child, and how it may distress the vulnerable child. Additionally, I explore the ethical insights and understandings presented in the book, and how they may be relevant to society. In the analysis section of the thesis, I employ Judith Butler’s concept of vulnerability in my interpretation of the novel to examine how the literary characters, Olaug and Daniel, are vulnerable. Furthermore, I draw on theoretical contributions from Rita Felski and Martha C. Nussbaum to highlight how literature can possess a power of recognition and contribute to eliciting empathy in the reader. Based on the aforementioned aspects of the work, I argue that the novel can have societal utility.
