In this bachelor thesis it will be examined why jokes can be challenging to understand for second language users. This will be done by explaining the composition, perception, and the humorous points of certain jokes in light of the relevance theory. Three jokes will be analyzed based on Francisco Yus’ theories of humor and relevance, which are based on Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber’s presentation of the relevance theory. The jokes provide a good starting point for a discussion regarding linguistic challenges for second language users. In addition to this, it will be given an explanation of relevant terms used in the analysis of the jokes.
