Photographers working in a digitized world are facing new challenges relating to digital platforms. In this thesis we explore the topic of image-sharing platforms and how their impact is on thework of professional photographers. This was done through the lens of digital platform work withspecific focus given to how photographers use them in their work. An exploratory case studyon Instagram was conducted as an attempt to enlighten this. Two photographers, who wererecruited to answer about how they use digital image sharing platforms in their work, a platformanalysis and observations from a discussion forum on photography was used as case data. Findingsindicate that Instagram is used as a platform by photographers for (1) creating a publicly accessibleportfolio for photography, (2) marketing themselves and (3) networking within their field of workand/or for reaching clients who hire them for work. Instagram separates itself out by having alarge audience, which is an incentive for photographers to use the platform. As an image-sharingplatform, Instagram contributes to the democratization of photography by devaluing the work andskill of taking a photograph. We conclude that image-sharing platforms has the potential to bean important part of photographers’ work, and that they can be thought of as used for labour byphotographers.
