dc.description.abstract | This thesis has studied the reflections from finite smooth and rough scattering objects, as an attempt to understand better how this combination can be handled. This was done through acoustical measurements done in an anechoic chamber at NTNU. The impulse responses from two same-sized convex polyhedra was measured and compared in the anechoic chamber. Two same-sized rocks with respectively smooth and rough surfaces were chosen as the studied objects. A hypothesis was that finite rough objects might be modeled as smooth finite objects for a part of the interesting frequency range. The rock with the smooth surface was also be compared to a digital simulation of the same smooth-surfaced geometry using a geometrical acoustics edge diffraction toolbox in MATLAB. The results showed that the rough-surfaced rock had similar impulse responses as a smooth-surfaced rock for some frequencies.
