Authenticity and Fidelity in Historical Fiction
Abstract
Da med fokus på filmen Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World (2003) og novellen The Far Side of The World (O’Brian, 2016) som filmen er basert på. In the following thesis I investigated what effects the adaption into films of historical literature would have on authenticity and fidelity. Focusing around the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World (2003), and also on the novel The Far Side of The World (O’Brian, 2016), which the film is based upon. By finding what source I wanted to asses and what adaption that followed with it, and after reviewing both the original source and its adaption I found the differences to the way the story was told, and from there I analyzed what effect this changes would have on the overall story and its authenticity to try and answer my thesis statement: “How does authenticity affect adaptions when portraying history, and do you need to sacrifice fidelity for authenticity or vice versa?”.
