Authenticity and Fidelity in Historical Fiction

Abstract

I den følgende oppgaven utforsket jeg hvilke virkninger adapsjonen av historisk litteratur vil ha på autentisitet og troskap. Da med fokus på filmen Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World (2003) og novellen The Far Side of The World (O’Brian, 2016) som filmen er basert på. Gjennom å finne hvilke kilder jeg ville gjennomgå og hvilken adapsjon som fulgte med den, og etter å ha gjennomgått både den originale kilden og dens adapsjon fant jeg forskjellene i hvordan historien blir fortalt, og derifra analyserte jeg hvilken virkning disse forandringene hadde på den generelle fortellingen som blir fortalt og dens autentisitet for å prøve å svare på problemstillingen min: "Hvordan påvirker autentisitet adapsjoner når den fremstiller historie, og må du ofre troskap til fordel for autentisitet eller omvdent?".

In the following thesis I investigated what effects the adaption into films of historical literature would have on authenticity and fidelity. Focusing around the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World (2003), and also on the novel The Far Side of The World (O’Brian, 2016), which the film is based upon. By finding what source I wanted to asses and what adaption that followed with it, and after reviewing both the original source and its adaption I found the differences to the way the story was told, and from there I analyzed what effect this changes would have on the overall story and its authenticity to try and answer my thesis statement: “How does authenticity affect adaptions when portraying history, and do you need to sacrifice fidelity for authenticity or vice versa?”.
