Our methods for navigation has evolved as technology has been developed. From usingstars to find our position we now use satellites. From using paper charts to now usingcomputers that display our charts and position for us. The aim and objective of thethesis is to try and see whether the operators that sail and use the system haveconfidence in them. The thesis focuses mainly on Electronic chart display and informationsystem with satellite navigation as support. To do this, theory on the subjects ofnavigation equipment and the human factor will be presented. This will be discussedagainst the results of the collected data. The data in the thesis comes from a quantitativesurvey that has been carried out. And also from data collected from accident reportsfrom the Norwegian Maritime Authority in the time period from 2009-2018.In the survey, navigators were asked to comment and grade their experiences with thesystems, reliability, concerns and confidence. The results are presented in graphs anddiscussed against the relevant theory and also discussed against some incidents reportedto the Norwegian Maritime Authority. Several findings were identified that are relevant tothe thesis. It turns out that there is a great deal of trust between the operators and the systems.Demographics has little to no effect on the level of trust in the systems, but can have animpact on concerns with different sources of error in the navigation systems. Theoperators seems to have good knowledge of the weaknesses and limitations of thesystems. The concerns of error sources on GNSS systems vary with the type of vesselthe operator sail. The main concern are mainly due to the systems are hard to use, complexity of the systems and the belief that some rely too highly on the systems anddon’t question the presented data. The importance of good training, in which the operators learn the structure of thesystems as well as the limitations and pitfalls. Seems to be a factor in raising confidencein the systems. Integrated bridge solutions can also be a factor in raising the situationalawareness of the operators. The integrated solutions can help the operator by placingimportant equipment by the operator and improving interfaces, buttons, alarms andremoving other noisy elements from the bridge. By involving the operators in the designface of the ship building, these future bridge solutions can help create a moretransparent and comfortable everyday life for the navigator.
