For å belyse denne problemstillingen blir relevant
relevant for problemstillingen.
behagelig hverdag for navigatøren.
dc.description.abstract | Our methods for navigation has evolved as technology has been developed. From using
stars to find our position we now use satellites. From using paper charts to now using
computers that display our charts and position for us. The aim and objective of the
thesis is to try and see whether the operators that sail and use the system have
confidence in them. The thesis focuses mainly on Electronic chart display and information
system with satellite navigation as support. To do this, theory on the subjects of
navigation equipment and the human factor will be presented. This will be discussed
against the results of the collected data. The data in the thesis comes from a quantitative
survey that has been carried out. And also from data collected from accident reports
from the Norwegian Maritime Authority in the time period from 2009-2018.
In the survey, navigators were asked to comment and grade their experiences with the
systems, reliability, concerns and confidence. The results are presented in graphs and
discussed against the relevant theory and also discussed against some incidents reported
to the Norwegian Maritime Authority. Several findings were identified that are relevant to
the thesis.
It turns out that there is a great deal of trust between the operators and the systems.
Demographics has little to no effect on the level of trust in the systems, but can have an
impact on concerns with different sources of error in the navigation systems. The
operators seems to have good knowledge of the weaknesses and limitations of the
systems. The concerns of error sources on GNSS systems vary with the type of vessel
the operator sail. The main concern are mainly due to the systems are hard to use,
complexity of the systems and the belief that some rely too highly on the systems and
don’t question the presented data.
The importance of good training, in which the operators learn the structure of the
systems as well as the limitations and pitfalls. Seems to be a factor in raising confidence
in the systems. Integrated bridge solutions can also be a factor in raising the situational
awareness of the operators. The integrated solutions can help the operator by placing
important equipment by the operator and improving interfaces, buttons, alarms and
removing other noisy elements from the bridge. By involving the operators in the design
face of the ship building, these future bridge solutions can help create a more
transparent and comfortable everyday life for the navigator.
