This thesis aims to determine the sound power emitted from a passing train using anacoustic camera. It includes testing of the acoustic camera, field measurements and asimulation. The testing of the camera’s capabilities involved a single test: Sound power measurement of a single source compared with conventional microphones. The differencein calculated sound power was found to be ≈ 2dB, which can be regarded as a goodresult considering some small measurement inaccuracies in the measurement process.Field measurements of train passbys are conducted at 3 different locations aroundOslo, Norway. A total of 46 train passbys are measured. Only 3 are further analyzedin this thesis; one from each location. The acoustic cameras beamforming is used torecord the sound emitted from a fixed point in space, and let the train move by thatpoint in time, giving a sound pressure level as a function of time, which arguablycorresponds to a sound pressure level as a function of the trains body length at a fixedtime, through identities of distance, speed and time. The recorded sound pressure levelis then tracked back to the source to evaluate how much energy is emitted, based onthe distance between the train and the camera. It seems clear that the train body emits the most sound from the axles and wheretwo axles are close by. By comparing the measurements to a simulation based onCNOSSOS-EU, it becomes clear that the simulation doesn’t have enough attenuation atthe less noisy parts of the train, compared to the field data obtained.
