Barn utrykker mye behov for informasjon.
Aim: The purpose of our thesis is to investigate how children cope with life when theirparent has cancer.
Method: This study program is based on our self-chosen syllabus literature andresearch. It was found through a systematic literature research, which was carried outthrough databases related to health science and medicine. This literature study consistsof seven qualitative research articles and one quantitative.
Result: Research shows that children are strongly affected by having a parent withcancer. Many children are experiencing psychosocial reactions as a result of the parent'sdiagnosis. Children need substantial support, good information and care to cope with theparents’ illness. Children usually don´t know how to cope with such situations and oftenare feeling left out and alone. Many children distance themselves completely from the illparent, which often results in role displacement within the family. Children express aneed for information, require to be well taken care of by parents and healthcareprofessionals.
Conclusion: Information adapted to the childs’ age and maturity-level contributes tooptimise the caretaking of the child and the family situation. Sufficient follow-up andsupport are important factors in order to cope with the new situations in the daily life ofthe child as a result of the parents’ cancer.
