This bachelor thesis presents a comparison between cast in place and precast concrete. Themain purpose of this thesis, is to get a better understanding of how to choose betweenthe two construction methods. When choosing between the two methods, there are manyaspects to consider. Dimensional analysis, economy and environmental impact are the keyfactors that will be compared.
To compare the building methods, it was necessary to acquire more knowledge about thebuilding materials, concrete and armouring. This was achieved by obtaining information,while being source critical. After the theoretical section, it was convenient to begin thedimensional analysis. The analysis was based on two beams, respectively reinforced andprestressed concrete. With the calculation done, the foundation for comparison was made.Having calculated the necessary amount of required building materials, it was possible tocalculate economic and environmental effects of the two building methods.
In addition to calculation and theoretical input, two different reference projects has beenused, respectively Bjerketunet (precast concrete) and Easy Living (cast in place concrete).By having depth interview with the Project Managers, it was possible to compare practicalaspects of building and how they evaluate the two methods. After combining results fromanalysis, interview and theoretical knowledge, a conclusion to the main thesis was made.
Throughout this project, the building methods have shown both advantages and disad-vantages. Comparing based on chosen premises, resulted in precast concrete being thebetter building method. Nevertheless, cast in place concrete still have many good qualitiesand characteristics. Contact with the building industry made it clear that the total costand profit are the crucial aspects, when choosing building method. To get a sustainablebuilding industry, the focus need to change from high profit to lowered emissions combinedwith a reasonable financial operation.
