Motivation is a topic in school that is incredibly important and relevant. It is essential with motivation to enjoy school life, and also to achieve the desired learning outcome through teaching. Nevertheless, there are many students who are struggling with motivation at school today, and especially related to mathematics. In recent years, a new practice has emerged into mathematics, open and exploratory tasks. Therefore, I have chosen to look at this through my task, to find out if this new direction contributes to creating more motivation and joy in mathematics. I have chosen the problem How can open assignments in mathematics be motivating for students in third grade? I have chosen to use qualitative research method in the Bachelor's thesis, and have therefore used an interview to collect the findings I have. Then I used the theory for discussion, and here I have chosen theories of mastering, motivation and adapted training respectively, when I thought this was the most appropriate theory. What was interesting to see in the findings was that the pupils, regardless of their academic level, thought it was fun with open tasks, especially in relation to problem solving in the book and standardized board teaching.
