Augmented Reality within Interior Design

The motivation behind this master thesis is to develop an application for Interior Design based on Augmented Reality (AR) techniques. AR systems add virtual computer-generated material to the surrounding physical world. 3D modelling software is in common use within architecture and interior design. These types of software tools make it possible to develop electronic 3D solid objects rather than just 2D drawings, and can in certain situations replace the overall physical prototyping process. But what these tools don t do is visualising the objects in real 3D. The aim for this thesis is visualising virtual interiors within a room, and enable a real-time interaction with the interiors. Implementations use the Open Scene Graph and VR Juggler frameworks for visualization and abstraction of tracking devices respectively. Results show that the quality of an AR system is highly dependent on the accuracy of the tracking system, in addition to the types of head mounted displays used.
