This paper discusses the post-scarcity in the novel The Long Earth (Baxter and Pratchett) and how different societies depicted in the novel succeed and fail in achieving a state of post-scarcity in order to determine what are the most important components of post-scarcity that humanity must be heedful to in hopes of realising a post-scarcity society. The definition of post-scarcity and its components is based on the collection of essays Post-Scarcity Anarchy by Murray Bookchin. The components include material abundance procured from minimal labour and advanced technology, decentralised, ecologically sustainable communities, alternate monetary systems and a life of freedom, equity and emotion-based values. In The Long Earth humanity is presented with the opportunity to resolve material scarcity and achieve a post-scarcity society. The opportunity comes in the form of infinite parallel Earths containing infinite resources. Humanity splits into distinct groups that vary in how they approach the opportunity. The groups are identified and categorised into three distinct societies based on their approach to post-scarcity. Their approach is weighed up to every component of post-scarcity to determine the most successful society. This proves to be the society that develop decentralized communities, a communal economy and slowly develop their technology to obtain an abundance of resources with minimal necessary labour while the society that focuses on material abundance forgoing technology and minimisation of labour and the society that possesses technology advanced enough to ensure an abundance of resources with minimal labour but does not change their economical or societal structure fall short of achieving post-scarcity indicating that humanity must concentrate on restructuring their society and monetary system into a communal structure and economy while also not forgoing the advantages of technology.
