Artificial intelligence (AI) is a new technology with many areas of use, including chatbots, which are increasingly spreading in society and are slowly making its way into schools. Many teachers express concerns about the consequences of chatbots in education and feels the need for guidelines on how to utilize this technology effectively (see Valand, 2023). At the same time, chatbots are being explored by both pupils and teachers, and teachers are discovering that they can be valuable with appropriate pedagogical and didactical adaptations. Previous research has highlighted the importance of having knowledge and skills to use the technology, both for teachers and students (see Kerneža, 2023; Odin Nøsen; Botheim, 2024). These studies suggest that proper use of the technology can have significant didactical potential.
In this masterthesis, I have explored how KI Sokrates can function as a guiding tool in pupils' writing processes. The study primarily focuses on the guidance strategies used by KI Sokrates and how its feedback is reflected in pupils’ texts. I also investigated how KI Sokrates helps generate ideas, plan, and structure pupils' fairy tales. This classroom study involves the use of AI in writing processes and aims to explore possible applications. I look into the experiences and perceptions of both pupils and their teacher regarding the use of the chatbot in education. The data consists of six pupils' chats with KI Sokrates, pupils’ texts, interviews with the pupils and their Norwegian teacher. The analysis shows that KI Sokrates uses guidance strategies as feedback, repetitions, hints, and questioning in interaction with the pupils to help them generate ideas and content for their fairy tales. It emerges that several pupils find KI Sokrates fun, but they also express criticism regarding the questions similarity, the amount of questions and their content. The teacher finds the chatbot to be a useful tool for generating content for the fairy tales but points out its inability to ask genre-specific questions. The study concludes that the interaction between KI Sokrates and the pupils works in terms of idea-generation and, for some, enhances motivation.
