Studies conducted by Statistics Norway (SSB) and the Norwegian Directorate of Health indicate that loneliness and obesity are an increasing problem in Norway, which negatively impact people's health and quality of life. Meanwhile, Dan Buettner, alongside other researchers, has been exploring areas around the world, known as Blue Zones, where people live longer and better lives than the average population. Through their research, they have identified certain common factors in the lifestyles of residents of the Blue Zone and how the surrounding community contributes to their health and quality of life. They have taken these factors, or lifestyle principles, and developed projects to implement them in other areas to help make the healthy choice the easy choice. So far, Buettner’s Blue Zone Project has focused on improving communities with the lifestyle principles in the United States, but I became curious how this would work in a local community here in Norway.
Through multi-stage focus group interviews, I wanted to investigate the following research question: "How do residents of the community experience that the use of lifestyle principles, inspired by the Blue Zones, affects their perception of their own health and quality of life?" I recruited a group of participants from Røa to engage in shared activities, primarily weekly walks, over a period of six weeks. The interview was conducted at the beginning, midway and at the end of the project period, to gain insight into their experiences. The sample consisted of five to eight participants who were residents of Røa, all of whom had an interest and motivation to participate in the project to try and improve their own health and quality of life. I conducted a thematic analysis of the collected data, which resulted in the following themes of results: 1) Mental health is perceived as improving through group walks, 2) Sense of belonging as a key role for good health and life quality, 3) The local community as a valuable framework for a good life, and 4) Good habits and future plans improve health and quality of life.
In light of theories on belonging, mattering, Blue Zones, and strength-based approaches, I discussed the study's four main findings. I highlighted the importance of physical activity for good health and quality of life, as well as belonging and community as central factors. The social network influences health-promoting choices and habits, while the feeling of being significant (mattering), is essential for quality of life. The Blue Zone principles have proven effective in improving participants' perceptions of their health and quality of life. The walking group at Røa provided participants with both physical activity and social connections, and many developed a positive outlook, which can promote health and quality of life. The role of the local community is crucial, and through strength-based approaches and engaged citizens, Røa can continue to develop as a place that promotes health and quality of life. This study demonstrates that by adopting the principles from the Blue Zones, communities like Røa can create environments that enhance health and quality of life. Shared walks emphasize the importance of regular physical activity for both physical and mental health, belonging, and overall quality of life. Participants' experiences show that a healthy and active lifestyle in community brings joy, well-being, and a sense of wellness that enriches their daily lives. My findings underscore the need for a holistic approach to community development that integrates both physical and social aspects to promote health and quality of life.
