Abstract
In this master's thesis, I aimed to challenge the notion that knitting is time-consuming, difficult, and unmotivating in elementary school. The motivation for this thesis stems from my personal joy and belief in the value of knitting in schools. Through a challenging knitting project tailored to my level and observations in a knitting class, I have explored how I can use these experiences to promote motivation in knitting instruction.
By working hermeneutically phenomenologically and practice-led, I accessed data through creative work, observations, and logs. I then analyzed the material with an emphasis on the hermeneutic spiral, A/R/Tography, and autoethnography. In the study, I found various motivational factors for knitting in both myself and the students. These motivational factors are further discussed in relation to previous research and theories on motivation, mastery, learning, and development.
Keywords: Knitting, arts and crafts, motivational factors.
