Abstract
Our bachelor thesis is a continuation of the specialization project from fall 2023, where we collaborated with SpareBank1 Østlandet to understand digital exclusion among the elderly (67+ years). Since the specialization project showed that problems with using BankID were a recurring issue for the elderly, we chose to further explore this in our bachelor thesis. The starting point was the research question: What can be done to solve the technical barriers and improve accessibility/user-friendliness in connection with logging in with BankID? In the discovery phase, we worked with the user group of home-dwelling elderly aged 67+. Most of our research and testing was conducted at Seniornett Stange. We followed the Double Diamond Design process with a focus on a user-centered approach to understand the users' needs and perspectives. Our main emphasis was on design methods such as observation, in-depth interviews, think-aloud, and survey. After the discovery phase, we decided to further explore the research question: How can we promote digital literacy among the elderly, and strategically motivate and engage them to maintain and increase their digital competence? The result was SOKK (Seniornett Online Competence Course). The solution is an elderly-friendly, web-based application that allows the elderly to complete Seniornett's courses at their level, offering practical exercises, skill tests, and simulators that allow them to explore, for example, logging in with BankID in a safe environment. The solution also offers the elderly the option to request assistance from Seniornett guides at home. There will always be some elderly individuals who, for various reasons, experience digital exclusion, or are physically or mentally limited from participating digitally. Digital exclusion is not a phenomenon that will disappear with the oldest in the population, existing in all demographic groups and ages. It is therefore important that public and private entities continue to offer an analog option for the non-digital citizens.
