dc.description.abstract | In this study, I have investigated how first-grade students engage in mathematical
reasoning an argumentation while working witg games. The purpose of this study is to
examine whether games can facilitate studens argumentation and reasonings skill at an
early stage in their schooling. The research question for this study is: How can games i
math forster argumentation and reasoning for first-grade students?
This is a qualitative study based on observations, audio and video recording of 10 firstgrade students divided into three groups. The students played a game collaborativerly,
aiming to complete the game togheter. I received a recommendation for the games used
in this study for an experienced teacher. The data was analyzed using Toulmins model of
argumentation, inspired by Krummheuer (1995). By applyning the model to analyze the
arguments, the concepts og argumentation and reasoning were also integrated. The
concept of argumentation was interpreted based on Stylianides (2007a) perspective,
while the concept of reasoning was informed by inductive an deductive reasoning as
discibed by McFeetis & Palfy (2018) and Reid (2002).
The result of the analysis demostrate thet the students in this case engage in
argumentation and reasoning during ther work with the game. This happend through the
students collaborating within the game, which in turn led to discussions. It was within
these discussions that the arguments and reasoning became apperent. I also observed
that the students arguments aligned with Stylianides (2007a) understanding of
mathematical argumentation, and their reasoning become apperentthrough their
arguments. The students employd what McFeetors & Palfy (2018) considerd to be
inductive reasoning throughout the game. Futhermore, I noted that the students
engaged in argumentation and reasoning both with and without input from a teacher,
and their particpation in game-based activited was substantial. | |
