Abstract

Previous research has shown that the extent of violence in Norwegian schools is particularly high; that the use of violence can have extensive consequences for the victim; and that special education teachers who work in special schools are particularly exposed to violence by their pupils. It is therefore interesting to investigate how the special education teachers apparently manage the burden of a working day characterized by repeated incidents of violence. The purpose of this is to point to possible factors that protects the victims against the burden of violent incidents. The research question is:
How do special education teachers experience and process the burden of violence from students in special schools?
To address the issue, the approach has been based on phenomenology. The empirical data is based on in-depth interviews with six special education teachers who work at special schools and who have experienced violence from pupils several times. Their experiences are understood and explained based on the study's theoretical framework. This framework consists, among other things, of theory around the concept of violence, Isdal's (2018) explanatory model, Grete Marie Skau's (2017) theory of professional competence and a set of theoretical perspectives on support from school leadership and colleagues.
This study finds that there are, in particular, three factors that are important on how special education teachers experience and process the incidents of violence. These factors are (1) the special education teacher's professional competence, (2) colleague's support and (3) role of school leadership. The results show that the special education teacher's professional competence has an impact on how the special education teacher understands the violence they are exposed to, and that this can be a moderating factor against the burden of the violence incidents. In this context, knowledge of acting out behavior and behavior interventions and personal competence appears to be particularly important. Regarding processing of the incidents of violence, the study shows that conversations with colleagues is the most important support experienced by the special education teachers. This study also finds that the school leadership's ability to take care of employees exposed to violence are important for how the special education teacher's experience and process the violence.
