Abstract
This study examines what teachers at secondary school think about source criticism and how they teach it. Through qualitative interviews with five teachers who teach social studies at the secondary level, the thesis seeks to answer questions about the understanding of source criticism among social studies teachers and how they teach it. Social studies also include a history component, where source criticism is a central method. Therefore, the study also explores how social studies teachers perceive the connection between source criticism in history education and source criticism in social studies as a whole. In the Norwegian curriculum Kunnskapsløftet 2020, critical thinking is emphasized to a large extent. Thus, the study also investigates how the emphasis on source criticism in teaching has changed with the implementation of this curriculum. The teachers in the study associate source criticism with determining the credibility of information and questioning the source of information. Some teachers broaden the scope and see it as a necessary skill for students to make informed decisions and contribute to a well-functioning democracy. Although the teachers describe some similar teaching methods, the interviews also indicate significant variation in source criticism instruction. This study seeks to inspire didactic theoretical and practical development of source criticism as a central competence for training in critical thinking. It takes a critical look at the curriculum's link between competence goals and the curriculum in general, and the connection between curriculum, understanding and teaching.
