The depths of animal consciousness in Watership Down
Abstract
The novel Watership Down by Richard Adams offers insight into animal consciousness through the use of the six basic human emotions (fear, anger, happiness, sadness, surprise and disgust). Since its publication in 1972, the book has had an important influence on how we humans perceive animals by anthropomorphizing the rabbit Hazel and his friends who are searching for a new home. Mythology also plays a central role in that it allows us to examine the rabbits' emotional experiences through symbolic representations and moral lessons.
