dc.description.abstract | In this qualitative interview study, I have researched the special education teacher's
experiences with challenging behaviour. The study's thesis statment is:
What experiences do special educators have with children with challenging behaviour in
kindergarten?
The purpose of this study was to investigate what kind of experiences the special education
teachers have with children with challenging behaviour in kindergarten. The background for
choosing the topic was, among other things, that there is little research on challenging
behaviour and that the desire is to gain more knowledge and expertise on this topic.
In order to answer the problem, a qualitative research method has been used, with a
phenomenological approach. The data materials have been collected through semi-structured
interviews with three special education teachers.
The study shows that the special education teachers emphasize building relationships as early
as possible in order to create trust and security. It appears that having a good relationship with
children with challenging behaviour is necessary to get a good job. It also appears in the study
that it is essential to have knowledge and competence about children with challenging
behaviour in order to be able to understand the child and act accordingly. Finally, the special
educators also emphasize the importance of collaboration. It is necessary that all parties
working with and around the child speak the same language in order to give the child the help
and support the child needs. The challenges are many, but it is consistent that time and
personnel are crucial for the special education teachers to achieve a good work process. In
addition, there is a lack of knowledge about competence among the kindergartens, which can
make it difficult for the special education teachers to put in place the right measures. The
conclusion is that it is important to set aside time for relationship building and trust.
Kindergartens must invest more in raising skills and knowledge about children with
challenging behaviour and cooperation can be strengthened with increasing knowledge. | |
