Funnene i oppgaven identifiserer et stort behov for utvikling av bransjespesifikkeforretningssystemer rettet mot små bedrifter. Mange av de små bedriftene i bransjen sitter medulike systemer som er lite tilpasset deres arbeidsoppgaver. Dette fører til svært mye merarbeid iform av repetitive prosesser som må gjøres manuelt. Systemene der i liten grad integrert medhverandre, noe som fører til mye merarbeid ved manuell overføring av data mellom de ulikesystemene. Videre identifiserer funnene nøkkelfunksjoner- og egenskaper som bør integreres i etnytt forretningssystem. Disse funksjonene og egenskapene i kombinasjon med åpne API-er tiltredjeparts dataleverandører, aktører i verdikjeden, eksterne systemer og nisjeløsninger, vil dannegrunnlag for å utvikle et godt forretningssystem som bransjen etterspør. I tillegg identifiseresblokkjedeteknolgi som en potensiell revolusjon i bransjen, der hele verdikjeden fra hav til fatkan være integrert. Til slutt identifiseres det et stort ønske blant flertallet av de undersøktebedriftene om utvikling av nye og bedre forretningssystemer. Funnene antyder at dette vil kunnegi bedriftene stor forretningsverdi, først og fremst ved tidsbesparelse ved at flere oppgaver ogprosesser vil bli automatisert. This master’s thesis addresses digitization in the seafood export industry of Norway. There arethree main parts of the thesis. Firstly, the market is explored and current business systems andtechnologies are identified. Furthermore, it explores the advantages and disadvantages of thecurrent systems and strategies. The last part probes further into companies’ self-views of whatimprovements are possible and how this may be accomplished. This section focuses on systemarchitecture, design, and functionality of business systems. Finally, it maps the industry needsfor technological change related to the degree of technological acceptance and maturity forchange. Regarding technological changes, the thesis contains an assessment of what value animplementation of a new and improved business system will be able to create companies inthe industry. The discussion and conclusion in the thesis focus on small companies. The thesisfocuses on four key topics related to the issue;
1. Which business systems exist today, and which critical functions are missing or areinsufficient?
2. When developing a new business system, specifically for small businesses, what kind offunctions and properties should the system consist of?
3. Regarding the willingness to change and technological acceptance, is the industry ripe fortechnological change, and how can any changes be implemented?
4. What kind of take will small businesses be able to obtain by implementing a new businesssystem, specifically developed based on their needs?
Both the technical aspect of the business system and the experiential aspect of the individualusers that have been interviewed are considered. To obtain the best understanding of how a newbusiness system can be developed and put into use, it is important to consider the human factorand not just the technical details in terms of design.
The evidence cited in this work is based on a round of interviews with seven different companiesin the industry. These companies have in common that they export seafood and use computersystems to perform their daily work tasks. A qualitative in-depth interview has been conductedby one representative from each company. The interviews give a quality overview of existingsystems in use, views on the development of new adapted business systems to the industry andtechnological attitudes. An introduction to the industry and its legal requirements, constructionof ERP-systems, blockchain technology, change processes and technological acceptance as wellas innovation and value creation forms the theoretical framework for further discussion in thethesis.
The findings in the thesis identify a great need to develop industry-specific business systemsaimed at small businesses. A large part of the small companies uses multiple different systemswhich are not adapted to their work tasks. The consequence of this reality is the use of extratime and reduction to completing repetitive tasks manually. Additionally, due to the lack ofintegration amongst industry systems, there is the additional work created in requiring transfer ofdata across systems manually. Furthermore, the findings identify key features and characteristicsthat should be integrated into a new business system. A combination of these findings with openAPIs to third-party data providers, value chain actors, external systems, and niche solutions, isthe basis of the development of the proposed business system. In addition, blockchain technologyis identified as a potential industry revolution where the entire value chain from sea to plate canbe integrated. Finally, the desire among the majority of companies in the industry to develop anew and better system has been clearly identified. The findings suggest that this could give thecompanies great business value, first and foremost by saving time by automating more tasks andprocesses.
