dc.description.abstract | Denne masteroppgåva utforskar tre dikt frå Tarjei Vesaas’ siste diktsamling Liv ved straumen
(1970) sett i eit økokritisk perspektiv.
I staden
dc.description.abstract | This master thesis explores three poems by Tarjei Vesaas’ last collection of poems Liv ved
straumen (1970) in an ecocritical perspective. An overarching goal is to highlight Vesaas’
lyrical poetry as an important contribution, both within the vesaasian authorship, and within
the ecocritical discourse as a whole. The theme throughout is the complexity of nature as
depicted in the poems. The thesis explores how nature depicted through Vesaas, is markedly
juxtaposed between the idea of human unification with nature, and the idea of human
separation from nature. This juxtaposition is explored through three selected poems from the
collection: The poem “Sommarsvevn”, the title poem “Liv ved Straumen”, and the final poem
in the collection “Nattleg vind”. Close readings of these three shows how the juxtaposed view
of nature manifests both within the individual poems, and in a comparison between them.
The thesis concludes that the depiction of nature in Vesaas’ lyric poetry does not end either in
a one-sided optimistic union with nature, neither a clear pessimistic separation from nature.
Instead, the poems invite the contrasting viewpoints along to the end, and highlights in this
way the value of both depictions as is presented in each of the alternative ecocritical schools
of thought. The poems showcase the need for opening up to nature and seek contact with it.
At the same time, they’re critically aware of the human limitations, which reminds us that
humanity may never completely become part of nature.
