Introduction: Aggression and violence in the workplace is widespread within the healthcare sector, and nurses are particularly vulnerable. Knowledge and competence are important both for preventing and dealing with aggression.
Purpose: To shed light on the various challenges in the prevention and management of aggression.
Method: The thesis is based on a literature study. A total of eight scientific articles were included. The articles discuss the role of therapeutic relationships, understanding of aggression and de-escalation.
Findings: Good communication is important for building therapeutic relationships. Trust and security are important elements in a therapeutic relationship. One's ability to regulate one's own emotions, as well as how the staff appears in the face of aggression can be decisive for the outcome. During de-escalation, the nurse's approach must be appreciative, empowering and empathetic.
Conclusion: Therapeutic relationships play an important role in preventing aggression and violence. Nurses' understanding, attitudes and ability to self-regulate are important skills in dealing with aggression.
