One of the purposes at a child welfare institution with placements on behavior is to secure thebest interests of the child through the rights clause, especially due to intrusive coercion.Research suggests that societal stigmas and prejudices can influence employees' narrativesabout youth in institutions. A narrative about the youth as resourceful or difficult can affectboth the measures given by the institution and the employees' views of the youth. The method used in the thesis is literature study. The thesis uses 5 different scientific articlesto shed light on the chosen issue: "How can stigmatization affect the social worker in therelationship with youth at a child welfare institution?".This thesis has had the aim: to understand how the connection between social factors - such asstigma and prejudice - and how the social worker's actions are affected by this. The measuresat institutions aim to develop the young peoples’ relational and social competence.Nevertheless, it may seem that the focus will be on treating difficult behavior and lacking aresource focus. The findings in the thesis indicate that in order to create a resource focusamong the youth, the employees have a responsibility by reflecting on their ownpreconceptions. Seeing the youth in institusions as resourceful, will enable autonomy andmake the youth responsible in their choices in everyday life. In this way, the institution willbe able to create room for mastery and develop independent, reflective young people.
