Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to create awareness around the effects of mindset in teaching situations surrounding student’s mathematical difficulties. The study looks at how the teacher’s mindset predicts the student’s level of self-efficacy, and how self-efficacy can influence to the student’s level of achievement. Participants in the study consisted of 113 teachers of mathematics from different elementary schools in Norway. The data was analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and in Structural equation modeling (SEM-analysis) in Mplus. Results indicated that growth mindset seems to predicts the teacher’s understanding of detectable mathematical difficulties, but not the underlying difficulties. Results also show how the teacher’s level of self-efficacy may be influenced by their mindset and their ability to motivate others. Limitations and implications are discussed.
