The use of herbal remedies and supplements is quite widespread throughout Europe, and thus also Norway. These products are first and foremost for personal use and should be applied in accordance with the products’ direction manual. The elderly are a patient group who may have symptoms that rage between having a reduced appetite, to having pain and afflictions that are caused by their aging process or other underlying diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine older resident’s attitudes and experiences with the use om natural remedies and supplements, as well as who they prefer to gather information from, what form they want the information to be in, and also how they perceive advice and guidance from the person providing the information. Furthermore, it was of interest to gain some understanding of the patterns of use of these products in this group.
This study has applied the use of a qualitative research method based on semi-structured interviews. The research subjects were elderly patients from age 65 and older who all lived in their own homes. The recruitment took place from November 2019 to February 2020. The informants were recruited from pharmacies and three different retirement homes Oslo and the surrounding area. A total of nine interviews were carried out with elderly patients who were able and willing to be interviewed.
A majority of the contestants were already quite familiar with the products they were using themselves. They did, however, want more information on them, as well as more sources documenting the products, indicated usefulness. Regular use of minimum one supplement and herbal remedies was reported by the informants, supplements were a more common occurrence. The most used products were vitamins and minerals. The purpose of using these products was to better one’s health, relieve ailments, boost immune systems, and/or give one’s body additional nutrition. The informants had a positive attitude towards the use of such products and were satisfies with the achieved effect.
The main sources of information, from which the informants had been given advice and recommendations, were from their friends, family, pharmacies, and doctors. Many of the participants expressed that they wished their doctors had more knowledge of the products and thus the competence to inform their patients in this field. There were variations regarding the amount of information that some of the patients had on these products. Health professionals should closely monitor the use of herbal remedies and supplements. The elderly also should consult with healthcare workers to a greater extent before they start using these products, to avoid any unfavourable use. Both doctors and pharmacists can contribute to correct use of these products by advising and possibly discover potentially dangerous combinations of conventional drugs and herbal remedies and supplements.
