BackgroundReports of children and adolescents with nonspecific and chronic pains are increasing. Chronic pains have negative consequences for both the individual and society as a whole.
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine physiotherapists' experiences in encounters with children and adolescents with non-specific and chronic pains and explore what competence they need to help them.
MethodWe have used a qualitative method to obtain data using a focus interview with four experienced physiotherapists. After the interview the transcript was written, and later analysed according to the principles of systematic text condensation.
ResultsIn our view the method used resulted in clear findings. Firstly, they show how the physiotherapists are focused on having a biopsychosocial understanding of the child's pain and see the importance of creating a good relationship with both the child and parents. Secondly, the results show that they emphasize their experience-based knowledge in their practice, and that they experience both benefits and challenges with the interdisciplinary collaboration.
ConclusionOur results indicate that to be able to help the children and adolescents, physiotherapists need more competence about children and adolescents´ pain, personality and bodily expressions. In addition, they need more competence in meeting parents and how to convey a biopsychosocial understanding of pain.
