Spring 2021 we received a problem for our bachelor’s thesis, the task was handed out from asupervisor at NTNU. The scope of our task was to make sure that thermal variations wouldnot have an influence on bolt pretentions in a 7” flange, and this would not lead to leakages. The task also contained the possibility to exchange the offshore flange material intoaluminum. These are problems that have occurred from real situations in the offshoreindustry. The project was solved by running specific Finite Element Analysis in the programcalled ANSYS. The simulations gave us specific stress, elongations, and deformation. Weconcluded that the bolt pretentions would not make it possible to create a leak, and thealuminum can be used as a flange material.
