Variations of ‘Mulan’ – the character on screen

Abstract

Walt Disney Company har vunnet utallige hjerter med sine minneverdige animerte klassikere, og i løpet av de siste årene har filmprodusenten forsøkt å nå ut til et bredere publikum ved å løfte gamle favoritter ut av deres animerte verdener og bringe dem inn i live-action universet via adaptasjon. I 2020 fikk man for første gang se Disneys live-action adaptasjon av animasjonsfilmen Mulan fra 1998, og det er den nye adaptasjonen denne bacheloroppgaven tar utgangspunkt i. Oppgaven tar sikte på å analysere endringene som er blitt gjort med hovedpersonen ‘Mulan’ ved å studere den sosiale og formelle konteksten til begge filmene. Hvordan fremstiller den nyeste adaptasjonen protagonisten sammenlignet med forgjengeren? Sammen uttrykker den formelle og sosiale konteksten til live-action adaptasjonen resultatene av analysen: nemlig en hovedperson som står i sterk kontrast til den animerte heltinnen som ble presentert 22 år tidligere.

The Walt Disney Company has captured countless of hearts with their memorable animated classics and in recent years they have attempted to reach out to a broader audience by adapting their animated favourites - taking them out of the animated world and bringing them into the universe of live-action. In 2020 Disney released the live-action remake of the animated film Mulan from 1998, and this bachelor’s thesis aim to examine the modifications done to the protagonist by studying the social and formal context of both films. How does the latest adaptation portray the character ‘Mulan’ compared to its predecessor? Together, the formal and the social context of the live-action adaptation present the findings of the analysis: namely a protagonist that contrasts strongly from the animated heroine we first saw 22 years before.
