Folklore and mythology of the Irish "Country People": Re-imagining Ireland in the works of William Butler Yeats and John Millington Synge

Abstract

Hensikten med denne oppgaven er å undersøke hvilken innvirkning litteratur hadde på Irlands kulturelle identitet og den nasjonale identitet som helhet fra slutten av det nittende og begynnelsen av det tyvende århundre. Frem til løsrivelsen fra Storbritannia i 1922 ble den irske kulturelle identiteten sterkt påvirket av hvordan britene hadde valgt å skildre irene gjennom årene, nemlig som ignorante, skitne og berusede aper. Gjennom forfatterskapet til Revivalist forfattere som William Butler Yeats og John Millington, undersøker denne avhandlingen hvordan de utnyttet de mytologiske aspektene ved den irske kulturen, folkeeventyrene som fantes på den irske landsbygda og hvordan deres nasjonalistiske politiske synspunkter påvirket litteraturen deres. Videre vil denne avhandlingen belyse hvordan den irske litterære vekkelsen klarte å bygge bro mellom det politiske og religiøse gapet i Irland gjennom forfatternes dikt, prosa og teater.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact literature had on Ireland's cultural identity and national identity as a whole during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Leading up to the secession from Britain in 1922, the Irish cultural identity was heavily influenced by how the British had chosen to depict the Irishmen throughout the years, namely as ignorant, filthy and drunken apes. Through the authorship of Revivalist writers such as William Butler Yeats and John Millington Synge this thesis explores how the Revival writers utilized the mythological aspects of native Irish culture, the folklore found in the Irish countryside and how their nationalistic political views influenced their literature. Furthermore, this thesis will shed light on how the Irish Literary Revival managed to bridge the political and religious gap in Ireland through the writers’ poems, prose and plays. Reviving the culture found in the Irish countryside by translating, categorizing, re-telling and re-imagining it.
