Corrugated steel culverts can in some instances be a viable option to more conventional stiff concrete-culverts or bridges over highways. One common way of designing such flexible culverts are by using FEM software in order to estimate the total response under certain loads. The most common way of doing FEM analysis of these culverts are seemingly by using a conventional 2D plain strain methodology, where the culverts essentially are modelled as a semi-infinite structure with zero strain parallel to the culvert. The problem with such analysis is the concentrated loads, from e.g. heavy vehicles, cannot be defined explicitly in the model. One way of avoiding this problem is through the use of so-called equivalent line loads, that to a certain extent can represent concentrated loads from road traffic.
In this thesis comprehensive FEM analysis of a fictional pipe arch corrugated steel culvert under the effect of traffic loading has been conducted. The studied culvert has a span of 8.9m, and a total height of 6.2m. The loads used in the analysis are taken from the governing European standard, Eurocode 1, which is used in the design of bridges. Through the thesis, 6 different series of analysis have been calculated and reported. For each series it has been carried out calculations for 8 different cover depths, $h_c$, ranging from 0.75m to 2.5m. Each different series have different model assumptions, and the goal of this thesis is to study the difference in estimated stress resultants from each of these different model assumptions. Roughly the series can be divided into 2 different categories: (1) 2D plain strain analysis using equivalent line loads, and (2) 3D analysis where the loads are modeled explicitly. In the category of 2D analysis it is 4 different series: (1) With the inclusion of compaction in the model, (2) without the inclusion of compaction in the model, (3) analysis using a simplified way of including the backfill in the model and (4) analysis using the Hardening Soil model to describe the behavior of the backfill, instead of using a linear elastic perfect plastic soil model. In the 3D category the analysis can be divided into 2 different series: (1) analysis where the essential orthotropic behavior of the steel culverts is included, and (2) analysis where a simplified isotropic assumption are used for the steel plates making up the whole culvert, which implies a way to stiff behavior in the longitudinal direction. In the orthotropic analysis, the difference in stiffness in the circumferential and longitudinal direction are included.
The results from the 2D FEM analysis imply that the different model assumptions can make a significant difference in the modeling of flexible steel culverts, especially for the estimated circumferential bending moments. This was especially apparent for the models without any inclusion of the compaction effects. The models without any inclusion of the compaction effects generally seems to underestimate the circumferential bending moment, especially for higher depths of cover. From the models where a simplified way of including the backfill are used, there generally seems to be good compliance with the models using much thinner layers of backfill materials. This indicates that a model using much fewer layers and phases can be an acceptable simplification. The analysis where the backfill material are modeled using the Hardening Soil model does not show significant difference from the analysis where a linear elastic perfect plastic soil model are being used. The differences are present, but with a few exceptions both the ring compression and the circumferential bending moments are very similar for both soil models.
Results from the 3D models show that the inclusion of orthotropic culvert behavior yields more conservative results compared to those obtained using a simplified isotropic approach. This is especially clear when looking at the circumferential bending moments for small cover depths.
Comparison of the 2D and 3D results generally shows large differences for the analysis with small cover depths, especially for the circumferential bending moments. The results indicated that the use of an equivalent line load in the 2D models to a large degree overestimates both deformation and circumferential bending moments. This statement also seems to be supported by similar studies in the past, where FEM results have been compared to empirical measurements. At the very end one last 3D model was carried out using similar line load that are used in the 2D plain strain models. The results from this 3D analysis where a line load is being used shows great agreement with the equivalent 2D analysis, both for the circumferential bending moment and ring compression. This implies that the representation of the load that in reality are concentrated over a small area, into something that essentially is an evenly distributed line load, does not manage to captivate the behavior of the culvert in a satisfying manner.
