In this bachelor thesis we have investigated the opportunities of installing a BIPV-system on thefaçade of “Innlandet Fylkeshus”; it will also include a rooftop PV installation. The study willconsider economic, technical, and environmental factors (LCA) before concluding with anoptimized solution. In respect to these factors, our thesis problem will be “Implementation of asolar energy system at Innlandet Fylkeshus – What technology provides an optimized solar energysystem in terms of economy, effect and environment?”
The first part of the assignment was to analyze the building’s infrastructure as well as the energydemand of the building. Further we decided to study three different options regarding PV modules:1. Monocrystalline silicon (single-crystalline).2. Polycrystalline silicon (multi-crystalline).3. CIGS – thin-film.
The simulations were performed using the PV*SOL software. In order to limit the scope of theassignment, it was decided that the project group should not go into building physical and detailedmounting calculations of the technologies. It was further limited in the environmental analysis tonot include the operational phase (use-stage) and the disposal/recycling phase of the system (EoL).
The factors considered provided different results. From a technical standpoint, the monocrystallinewas the highest performing technology; from an economic standpoint, the polycrystalline was theleast costly, and lastly in the environmental sense, the CIGS – thin-film was the technology withthe smallest environmental impact. When we considered the deviation in value for each factor, weconcluded that the polycrystalline was the overall optimal technology for the BIPV-system. For therooftop installation, monocrystalline was selected due to the superior technical performance.
