The installation of rock support is one of the most important procedures during tunnelling. The aim is that the installed rock support is optimized regarding the rock mass conditions, as a result the cost due to rock support will be reduced. To determinate the necessary rock support there exist several rock mass classification systems, with corresponding recommendations for installed support. One of the inconveniences with these classification systems is that their empirical data is mostly from tunnels excavated by drill and blast. The focus point for this master thesis will be to look at the rock support and the corresponding rock mass classification data in tunnels excavated with Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). The result of this process is consequently compared to the theoretical rock support values, Q, based on the recommendations from the Q-system developed by Barton et al. (1974). To carry out this master thesis the author has obtained information and data from four projects which correspond to the thesis objectives. Additionally, a document study has been carried out and summarised in tables, diagrams and in separate Excel-files. The author has also been communicating with key actors within the field. Before the initiation of the project, a literature review was utilised to identify relevant information and the research status of rock support with tunnels excavated by TBMs. During this review the author realized that there was not a lot of reports and investigations within this scientific field. Further, it was chosen to calculate the necessary rock support as Norwegian kr/m to obtain a tangible result with the basis of comparison of the rock support diagram for the Q-system. The results express tendencies that it is required to have less support in tunnels with a high Excavation Support Ratio (ESR), but with lower ESR-values the tendencies shows the opposite. In project 2 the average difference on theoretical and actual costs is 100 %, with extreme values on 42 % and 217 %. These values were found on the Q-value equal to 0,75 and 100. This is not in line with the theory which indicates that these tunnels require less support because of favourable stress conditions and low disturbed area. A different reality is shown in project 1 where the average difference is about 34 %, with extreme values on 1 % and 96 %. This corresponds to a Q-value equal to 0,4 and 0,9. To conclude there should be done a broader study within this field to gather and analyse more relevant data from several projects, with the same qualifications as the one in this thesis. Consequently, it might be possible to determine and write a recommendation on how to proceed with rock support with tunnels excavated by TBMs.
