Sammendrag
BackgroundThe offshore-industry is an engineering centered and standard driven industry with limited room for innovation. Recent years have shown a paradigm shift towards more conceptual work and interesting implementation of design thinking, challenging the conventional solutions and ideas. This has accelerated the development towards a more holistic multi-dicipline approach to the offshore operations, and redefined many of the conventional aspects for the better.
As the operational elements have evolved, the complexity of the ships have increased rapidly. Extensive work has been done to simplify and integrate bridge solutions, but the framework comprising these advanced interaction platforms have seen little change. The bridge exterior is built upon traditional solutions that does little to reflect the improved capabilities and advancements that have taken place.
The ship-building industry is showing an increased focus towards solutions that reflect the ships capabilities through a clear and recognizable identity. The end-users want a more functional bridge that enables simpler, safer and more situation aware operation then the currently provided solutions.
GoalsThrough a partnership with Ulstein Group ASA, this thesis aims to present an implementable and realistic framework, which standardizes a better bridge solution that minimizes view obstructions and facilitates better exhaust solutions, helideck integrity and general operation. The design should provide a recognizable, confident and aggressive identity that reflects the ships capabilities. The solution must be scalable for the diverse range of current and future ship designs, covering a wide range of ship divisions and advanced operations with varying needs and limitations.
MethodsThe design concept was developed by applying design thinking to challenge the engineering-centered, conventional solutions, through user-insight, inspiration from other industries, prototyping, conceptual design, field research and visualization.
ResultsThe research uncovered specific problem areas, along with key design-elements, more or less company specific, that were defined for further development.
The product is a three-dimensional parametric framework applied to two exisiting Ulstein hulls (PX121 and SX121). This demonstrate the scalable bridge design and its operational enhancements, along with the strengthened visual identity, carefully designed to complimet the iconic Ulstein X-BOW®.
