Within the road construction industry there have been many attempts to identify the major cost and time overrun causes. However, it seems that a comparation between these factors for projects of different size has not been applied. The purpose of this study is to find the major causes of cost and time overrun for norwegian road projects of different size and evaluated if the ranking of the causes is similar. This study is based on a questionnaire survey answered by workers of Statens Vegvesen specialized in road construction projects and data gathered through a literature review. The analysis of the questionnaire survey reveal that the top five cost overrun causes for workers with mostly experience in small road projects are inadequate specifications, lack of coordination between designers, ground condition, terrain conditions and lack of information and coordination between parties. While the top five cost overrun causes for workers with mostly experience in medium road projects are ground condition, lack of coordination between designers, incomplete drawings, inadequate specifications and soil quality. For workers with mostly experience in large road projects the top five cost overrun causes are ground condition, frequent design change, incomplete drawings, lack of coordination between designers and market conditions. The analysis of the questionnaire survey also reveal that the top five time overrun causes for workers with mostly experience in small road projects are awarding project to the lowest bid price, poor site supervision by contractor, poor qualification of the contractor s technical staff, rework due to errors during construction and poor terrain conditions. While the top five time overrun causes for workers with mostly experience in medium road projects are poor ground condition, poor communication by contractor with other construction parties, innapropiate design, change order by the owner and conflict between contractor and other parties. For workers with mostly experience in large road projects the top five time overrun causes are poor ground condition, change order by the owner, awarding project to the lowest bid priece, ineffective scheduling of project by contractor and late desing works. This thesis concluded that the ranking of cost and time overrun causes for norwegian road projects of different size is similar but not equal according with the Spearman rank correlation and the hypothesis testingen
