da pasienter får livsforlengende behandling istedenfor palliativ omsorg.
For å unngå unyttig
dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to explore the nurses' experiences in the practice of
palliative care for patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in the final
phase. The method systematic literature study was used. The study included 8 qualitative
research articles from Western countries. The analysis method described by Evans was
used. The study shows how nurses experienced the practice of palliative care and their role in
it. According to the nurses' experience, patients with COPD receive insufficient palliative
care. The nurses emphasized patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration in the
practice of palliative care, but it was hampered by several factors. Trust, time, calm
approach and communication skills are considered important in the relief of difficult
symptoms. End-of-life discussion is vital for the practice of palliative care and the
prevention of futile treatment. Supporting hope and helping patients and their families in
decision making is an important nursing task. Nurses may experience action against their
care values, as patients receive life-prolonging treatment instead of palliative care.
To be able to practice good palliative care, nurses need competence and experience.
Building confidence is a factor in alleviating difficult symptoms. The patients with COPD
must receive the same offer as patients with cancer when the need arises. To avoid
unnecessary treatment, end-of-life-discussions must be conducted, and patients must be
given time to get adequate help so that symptoms of deterioration are detected as early
as possible. Furthermore, are nurses in need for emotional control.
