There are many different actors supporting early stage-ventures in the startup ecosystem, where accelerators often serve as a first entry point, manifesting themselves as a vitalcontribution in helping startups grow at a key stage in their development. Several elementsunderlie the value added by accelerators, amongst these are mentorship, counseling, investments and access to a valuable network.
A growing trend in both accelerator literature and practice is vertical specialization, focusingon industry specific accelerators compared to the initial generalist accelerators. Prior researchhas shown that resources and activities needed to create and grow a startup differ dependingon whether it has a social or conventional objective, and as a result, it is important thatsupport organizations have programs tailored particularly to the startups they attract. Thepurpose of the study is therefore to investigate what the differences in program offerings are,in order to see if there is a fit between the resources provided by the accelerators and theneeds of different types of entrepreneurs.
The research was conducted through a qualitative approach with a multiple-case study design, including two different accelerator programs in Norway. One impact technology accelerator, with a focus on sustainability startups and one technology accelerator, with an open selectionin regards to startups. Further, the case studies were investigated from a Resource Based View(RBV) to detect the value adding resources provided by the accelerators. In addition, a secondlayer of co-production mechanisms were included, to evaluate how business assistanceoccurred through a joint relationship between accelerator managers and entrepreneurs.
The findings suggest that the sample of participating entrepreneurs were overall satisfied withthe services provided. The differences between the accelerators in regards to programofferings were miniscule, offering a lot of similar services. Where the programs differ on theother hand, is related to how it is structured, and who delivers the different services. Theimportance of the management team’s involvement through counseling services and networkfacilitation also plays a vital role on startups progression in accelerators.
