ytringsfrihet. Hovedfunnene mine var at den konkurransedemokratiske tilnærmingen preger
de fleste elevenes demokratiforståelse. Likevel viste noen få elever en dypere forståelse
knyttet til deltakerdemokrati og det deliberative demokrati.
dc.description.abstract | This study investigates how secondary school students´ understand the concept of democracy. Through collecting textual responses in two classes at a secondary school, I have formed a pre-understanding of the students´ understanding of democracy. My research question is: what kind of understanding do secondary school students have for the concept of democracy? To investigate this question, I have used the qualitative method of text analysis to examine the students´ thoughts, opinions, knowledge and understanding of the concept democracy. The analysis and discussion have been conducted in the light of three democracy models: the competitive democracy, participant democracy and deliberative democracy. The findings in the paper were linked to previous research on the understanding of democracy amongst upper secondary and secondary students. The analysis confirmed my hypothesis, that the understanding of democracy amongst secondary school students is rather narrow. In addition to this, the students predominantly associate the concept of democracy with the rule of law, to vote in election and freedom of speech.
My main findings were that the competitive democratic approach depicts most of the students´ understanding of democracy. However, a small proportion of the students showed a deeper understanding related to democracy and deliberative democracy.
