The genders in sociological crossfire: Men are a desired resource in the kindergartens, but why? It has become the common strong point of view in politics of education, that men are an exceptional educational resource in kindergartens. For the sake of gender equality in the labour market one is thus to promote a higher proportion of male workers in kindergartens. We find reasons to challenge these premises in a comprehensive research project on male and female employees’ educational values in 80 kindergartens in two Danish municipalities. The empirical part consists of answers to a questionnaire from some 700 staff members as the range of questions also includes dimensions of gender. The theoretical approach is informed by the framework developed by Pierre Bourdieu, and the Grid Group Cultural Theory of Mary Douglas. In the subsequent discussion of these findings we examine how the kindergarten backdrop rather shows a masculine dominance than a female predominance.
