Abstract
Metode: Denne studien tar utgangspunkt i åtte forskningsartikkler.
In Norway there is about 450 000 children from 0-18 years in families where the parents have a mental illness and/or Substance abuse problem. This theme was chosen because we wanted to know more about this subject, and get a bigger understanding of how to take better care of children in these situations.
Purpose: The purpose of this literature study was to get more knowledge about how to grant and care for children as next of kin of parents with mental illness and/or substance abuse.
Method: This study is based on eight research articles. One of the articles is quantitative, and seven of the articles are qualitative. In the search for research-articles, we used a PIO-form to make it easy to get an overview.
Results: Children of parents with mental illness and/or substance abuse struggle with frustration, anxiety and mental health problems. By providing informed information adjusted to the children`s perceptiveness may the children have a better starting point to handle everyday life in the children`s own home.
Conclusion: Children as next of kin to a parent with mental illness and/or drug abuse have a tendency to get forgotten. It`s important that these children get picked up and get treatment early in life so that the children can get a good start at their childhood.
