An extended end plate connection for rectangular hollow sections subjected to bending moment is examined. The end plate extends on two sides of the RHS and has one bolt on each side. The connection is commonly considered as ideally pinned for end-rotation about the weak axis of the connection, i.e., about the axis through the two bolts, while it is partial-rigid about the other main axis. The objectives of the present study are to obtain data for both the initial bending stiffness and the capacity of the end plate connection for moment about each of the axes, and to compare with predictions of the component method of EN 1993-1-8. Classical yield line analysis is used to develop the expressions for the moment resistances. The test results are used for a discussion of the stiffness boundaries for joint classification for this particular connection.
