dc.description.abstractThe first three chapters present the result of the literature study. The first chapter is an overview of ultrasound principles and ultrasound systems as seen from a signal processing standpoint. The second chapter presents theory on the nature of speckle noise found in several papers on the subject. This includes why speckle appears and statistical properties of speckle. The third chapter presents various post-processing algorithms for reducing speckle noise. The most promising algorithms were implemented in Matlab, to be able to assess quality of the output when filtering ultrasound images provided by Aurotech. The selection of algorithms was further narrowed, and some algorithms implemented in C. This enabled performance testing and filter evaluation on the ultrasound system itself.nb_NO
